“A Survey of the City of Hartford, 1790″

“A Survey of the City of Hartford,” manuscript drawn by Solomon Porter, 1790. 54 ½ inches by 41 inches. Hartford History Center, Hartford Public Library.

Solomon Porter was a prominent citizen of Hartford (merchant, grammar school principal, city clerk, etc.), and his survey map of the city became a template for multiple later maps.  He provided the names of all the streets and depicted mostly structures that encroached on those streets, but he also included important structures such as mills, bridges, and dams, the State House, the meeting house, and the wharves. (Hartford was a prominent river port well into the 19th century).

To see a print reproduction of this map, please visit the Hartford History Center. The curator will make it available for view.
