Born in West Africa in 1729 and captured and taken via the infamous Middle Passage to New England where he was a slave for 26 years, Venture Smith regained his freedom and went on to become a prominent citizen of Connecticut. In 1798 he wrote and published the first known African American autobiography, a literary masterpiece from the early American Republic.

The Documenting Venture Smith Project will present the launch of his new biography with a brief talk by the authors Chandler B. Saint and Robert P. Forbes. A donor will be donating the book to every public library in Connecticut. Descendants of Venture Smith will be in attendance as well as Connecticut state officials.

The event is co-sponsored by the Documenting Venture Smith Project, Peter Tillou, and the Connecticut State Library.
